A New Patient | A New Program

JHI is honored to welcome a new member to our patient family — a bright, resilient little boy named Veljko.

Born in Serbia in July 2021, Veljko recently celebrated his fourth birthday in Chicago, where he now lives with his family. They relocated so he could receive around-the-clock medical care for a condition that remains undiagnosed. Today, more than 35 dedicated providers across multiple specialties collaborate to support his growth, comfort, and quality of life.

Veljko’s parents, Dragana and Darko, have faced every challenge with extraordinary strength and perseverance. They continue to shoulder the costs of vital medical supplies and therapies on their own — a reflection of their unwavering love and advocacy for their son. But like so many families on complex medical journeys, they can’t do it alone.

New Patient Categories

As part of JHI’s 2026 objective to expand our patient program, we’re introducing new categories of patient support: Major Cases, Minor Cases, and Medical Sponsorships. Veljko will be one of the first patients included in our Medical Sponsorship program.

Through this initiative, JHI will help fund travel for Veljko and his family to Texas, where he will undergo an important gastrointestinal procedure led by Dr. Arthur Krigsman. This next step could uncover critical insights into the connection between Veljko’s gut and brain — insights that may finally bring relief from the pain and absorption issues that have affected him since infancy.

As the season reminds us of the power of community, Veljko’s story stands as a vivid reminder of what’s possible when families, physicians, and supporters unite. Together, we can transform uncertainty into progress — and possibility into healing.
