Medical Spotlight: How Tissue Expansion Restores Lives and Hope

If you have followed recent updates from Justice Health Initiative (JHI), you might have noticed raised bumps on the heads or bodies of some of our young patients. Far from being a setback, these raised areas are tissue expanders, an incredible reconstructive technique allowing the body to naturally grow its own skin.
How Tissue Expansion Works
Tissue expansion harnesses the body's natural healing capacity to generate new tissue under gentle, controlled tension. The process unfolds across three key phases:
Initial Surgical Placement: A surgeon places an empty, balloon-like silicone device beneath the skin adjacent to the area requiring reconstruction. Because it is deflated at first, it fits comfortably without excessive tension.
Gradual Filling & Growth: Once the surgical site heals, medical staff periodically inject saline into the expander through a tiny valve. This gradual expansion encourages the body to produce new skin cells that match the surrounding area in tone, texture, and hair coverage.
Final Reconstruction: After enough extra tissue has grown, a second operation is performed to remove the expander and use the newly grown skin to reconstruct damaged areas.

Leo: A burn survivor generating healthy skin to swap out damaged tissue.
