Unexpected Challenges for Twins

Over the past weeks, the girls have been making steady progress and improving day by day. But since last Thursday, they’ve faced a few unexpected challenges.

That morning, the medical team noticed a thin area of skin near one of the tissue expanders on their heads—a condition known as a recession, where tissue pulls back from its normal position. To address it, the team drained excess fluid, removed the thinned section of skin, and carefully stitched the edges back together. They also placed a protective dressing over the area. Thankfully, there’s no incision beneath, and our hope is that this spot will heal quickly so tissue expansion can continue as planned.

On Saturday, Mariem experienced a seizure. It was treated immediately, and she recovered well, returning to her usual self soon after. The doctors think she may need a slightly higher dose of her medication, but at this point, they’re not overly concerned and believe these episodes may be temporary. They’ll keep a close eye on her, and if another seizure happens, they’ll run additional tests.

Monday morning, we’re grateful to report that both girls are doing well. The medical team is monitoring them closely and working toward getting them back on track with their treatment.

We continue to pray—and believe—that Mariem and Fati will soon be able to move forward in their healing process. Your ongoing prayers, encouragement, and support mean the world to their family and to all of us here at JHI.
